On April 9, 2021 at approximately 2:32 a.m., Fremont Police dispatch received 9-1-1 calls regarding a collision at Thornton Ave and the I-880 off ramp.  When officers arrived on scene, they located two vehicles in the intersection with major damage. 

Fremont police and fire personnel rendered medical aid to the involved community members. The two drivers and one passenger were transported to local trauma centers suffering from major injuries. Unfortunately, the passenger succumbed to their injuries. Information on the deceased passenger is pending coroner’s identification and notification of next of kin.  

The Fremont Police traffic unit were called out to investigate the collision.  Preliminary investigation revealed, one vehicle was traveling westbound Thornton Ave and the second vehicle was northbound on the I-880 off ramp.  A witness told our investigators the vehicle exiting I-880 had a green light to enter the intersection.   As the vehicles approached the intersection, the westbound vehicle struck the vehicle exiting the off ramp.  The diver of the westbound vehicle is a Fremont resident, and the driver of the other vehicle is a resident of Newark.

Traffic investigators have cleared the scene and are actively investigating the collision.  Alcohol may have been a factor in this collision. 

This is the third fatal traffic collision of the year.
