The Fremont Police Department has seven K9 teams with five K9s trained in locating suspects/persons, and two K9s trained in explosive ordinance detection (EOD) and gunshot residue detection (GSR).  The K9 teams are assigned to the Patrol Division but serve the entire Department during high-risk operations, SWAT callouts, missing persons cases, special events, outside agency requests, and community engagement events.  The K9 teams are strategically placed on patrol shifts to maximize coverage 7-days a week, as well as aligning the EOD K9s with school and business hours when most bomb threats occur.  All FPD K9 teams are also subject to after-hour callouts when necessary.

The K9 teams are put through continuous training and exceed standards set by the California Commission on Peace Officers Standards and Training.
